SPECIALIST SERVICE GUIDEWater Supply Pipe Replacement & Installation
Compare specialists for water supply pipe replacement, renewal and new installation, from domestic connections to private commercial pipework. The installation method should suit the route, pipe specification and site conditions.
Replacing an Existing Water Supply Pipe
A replacement project needs clear start and finish points, a suitable new route and an agreed connection arrangement. Tell the contractor about shared supplies, outbuildings, outside taps and any branches that must remain connected. Ask how the old supply will be disconnected and which surfaces will be reinstated.
Lead Pipe Replacement
If a lead supply pipe is suspected, ask the engineer to identify its material and establish the extent of the proposed replacement. The privately maintained supply pipe and the water company’s communication pipe may need separate arrangements. Check the water company’s current connection process before agreeing the programme; do not assume one contractor’s quotation includes work on the public network.
Moling, Directional Drilling or an Open Trench?
Impact moling can install pipe between access pits on a suitable route. Horizontal directional drilling uses a steerable drilling process and may suit longer or more complex alignments. An open trench may be needed where ground conditions, services or access make trenchless installation unsuitable. Our trenchless installation guide explains the differences.
Planning a New Installation
Ask the specialist to assess the required flow, pipe diameter, material, entry point and connections. A larger pipe alone does not guarantee an improved supply: the available network conditions and the complete system matter. Agree permissions, the interruption to supply, testing and the certificate applicable to the work.
For a shared supply, establish which properties each section serves and obtain the necessary access agreements. For development infrastructure, read the self-lay explanation in our FAQs; self lay is currently listed only for Cascade Water Services.
